The world needs clean air

Atlas Copco manufactures a wide range of compressors, air treatment tools and equipment for construction and mining. Made in factories around the world, these are marketed under a multibrand range.

Around the end of 2003 the plant in Antwerp (Belgium) reviewed their coating process and set some ambitious targets for painting. The process had to

  • have lower environmental impact
  • give a tough, durable finish
  • be economical
  • give a visually appealing finish
Motors and gearboxes of all shapes and sizes have to be given a tough, appealing finish before assembly in products such as compressors

A particular problem was the variation in size and weight of components — from a few kilograms up to 1ton!

Visually, the parts had to comply with the specifications of the designers. Technically, the coating had to be tough enough to beat all the corrosion protection and humidity tests — and yet it had to be applied efficiently and be gentle on the environment.

After several months of interaction between Atlas Copco, Becker Germany, and EPS (the line manufacturer), a solution emerged that met all requirements — a Promix 2K line with 2 robots spraying the primed components with a single-coat 2K water borne finish developed by Becker Germany. Positive proof that early co-operation involving all parties can provide cleaner air, both for industry and for us!
